NGO Sector
Program |

|
|
|
|
Overview |
|
|
|
|
|
In
the NGO sector, CHL is implementing a community-based program in
close collaboration with HCP partner Save the Children. The
program is based on CHL’s Community Mobilization Model and
consists of a package of interventions designed to improve the
health of individuals, families, and communities. Local
Community Development Associations (CDAs) in the focal villages
are at the center of the program, and take on the role of
mobilizing and empowering the community through health-related
activities. The program follows a specific process in each focal
village, starting with building the capacity of the CDA, moving
on to developing and mobilizing community leadership, and
finally carrying out a series of family health interventions
using community workers in cooperation with public sector health
service personnel. |

CDA
Capacity Building |
|
|
|
|
|
A novice CDA is teamed with a veteran CDA to share knowledge and
skills towards building the capacity of the novice CDA. A
village assessment is performed, and a village health committee
is established which then develops need-based programs. |

Community Leadership |
|
|
|
|
|
The CDA-led VHC marshals leadership from the community by
identifying potential volunteers and leaders and holding a
series of meetings, including Arab Women Speak Out (AWSO)
leadership trainings for women, and Dawar meetings for men which
bring together different community voices to identify shared
issues and a process for solving them. |

Together with the CDA, the volunteers implement the family
health package, including:
1. Visits to newlyweds to introduce the health activities
available in the community and provide counseling on family
health issues.
2. Ante-natal and safe delivery classes for pregnant women.
(Adapted from Improving Pregnancy Outcomes Through Positive
Deviance –IMPRESS.)
3. Post-partum home visits from nurses and volunteers, with
information on proper breastfeeding, importance of initiating
family planning method within 40 days of delivery, and
monitoring health of mother and infant. (Adapted from IMPRESS.)
4. Health and nutrition classes for mothers with identified
at-risk children. (Adapted from Nutrition, Education and
Rehabilitation Program – NERP.) |

Coalition Building |
|
|
|
|
|
To sustain improved health results for the people of Egypt, CHL
works to establish alliances between organizations with shared
or overlapping health agendas that function independently of the
donor project. The members of these coalitions will be
representatives from Community Service Organizations operating
at a governorate level in coordination with government bodies
and local private sector agencies, and will endure beyond the
life of the project. The coalition will help ensure the
sustainability of positive health outcomes.
CHL entered into a strategic collaboration with the United
Nations Development Program (UNDP) at the end of 2004 to form
such coalitions that employ the UN’s Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs) as a planning and monitoring instrument in
activities to increase civic ownership and empower communities
to effectively participate in local development efforts. More
than half of the MDGs tie directly into CHL health objectives. |
