The Communication for Healthy Living Project is a collaborative project between the Egyptian government and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Technical assistance is provided by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Center for Communication Programs, a lead member in the Health Communication Partnership comprising: Academy for Educational Development, Save the Children, The International HIV/AIDS Alliance, and Tulane University’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

CHL works with a number of implementing partners in the public, NGO, and private sectors, and organizes the coordination of work among these partners to leverage resources and results.

Ministry of Health and Population

The Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) is the lead government agency responsible for health policy and services in Egypt, including the setting of national priorities for health communication. The MOHP operates a network of over 4000 health clinics, and a cadre of health outreach workers, the Raedat Refayat, who provide health information to local communities.

USAID

The United States and Egypt began working together on health programs and projects in 1975. Since1983, the program has emphasized strategies and activities that have successfully reduced infant and child illness and mortality. While earlier programs focused on women and children, current programs target families.

USAID/Egypt’s Strategic Objective (SO) 20, “Healthier, Planned Families,” will contribute to the Government of Egypt’s (GOE) efforts to reduce population growth, promote infection prevention practices, reduce maternal and child mortality, as well as promote healthy lifestyles and advance health sector reform. As the fifth and final planned health and population program between USAID and the GOE, sustainability is of prime importance to the success of SO 20.

SO 20’s six Intermediate Results (IRs) form a cohesive framework that is organized into management units. Each unit is associated with a project and has distinct program areas and results.

  • IR 20.1 Improved Maternal and Child Health (HM/HC).

  • IR 20.2 Improving Our Health Through Planning Our Families(FP/RH).

  • IR 20.3 Improved Surveillance and Response to Infectious Disease (IDSR).

  • IR 20.4 More Effective Communication for Healthy Living (CHL).

  • IR 20.5 Health Workforce Development (HWD).

  • IR 20.6 Focus on Family Health (FFH).

Health Communication Partnership

The Health Communication Partnership (HCP) (www.hcpartnership.org) links five leading institutions together to accomplish its goal of strengthening public health in the developing world through strategic communication programs. HCP and its partners work to create an environment that supports individuals, families, and communities to act positively for their own health and to advocate for and have access to quality services.

Supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), HCP’s reach is global with programs in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Near East, and Europe/Eurasia.

Core Partners in the Health Communication Partnership are:

Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health/Center for Communication Programs (JHU-CCP)
